Multilingual: managing content in multiple languages
Introduction
Artshell supports content management in three languages: Italian, English, and French.
The Multilingual feature allows you to create and customize content in the various available languages, making records, events, Insights, and other content accessible to an international audience.
Important: Translations are not automatically generated by Artshell but must be entered manually in the fields designated for each language.
Why use the multilingual feature
Using the Multilingual feature is especially important when you want to share content from your account with an external audience, particularly an international one.
The information entered in the various languages is, in fact, used in the sharing links and in the exports from the various sections (Artworks, Contacts, Insight, Events), as well as in other content published or sent via Artshell.
If a record filled out only in Italian and is exported or shared in English or French, the translatable text fields will not be displayed in the exported version. Instead, only data common to all languages will be visible, such as technical, identifying, or structural information; see the next section of this article for a list of the common fields.
For example:
If your account is filled out entirely in English and you generate an export in Italian, the export will include only the non-translatable fields that are common to both languages. Titles, descriptions, notes, or other translatable text content will remain blank if they have not also been filled out in the Italian version.
For this reason, before sharing content with an international audience, we recommend that you verify that the records complete in the language in which you want to generate the link, export, or publication.
How to manage the multilingual option
When you create a record content in Artshell, you can change the language using the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner.

From this menu, you can switch between languages and enter the translated text into the available fields. This way, the same content can have Italian, English, and French versions.
After filling out a form in English, you can select "Italiano " or " Français" from the language menu and enter the corresponding translation in the translatable fields.
Copying content from another language
To make the translation process easier, Artshell lets youcopy content that has already been entered in another language. This feature is useful when you want to start with an existing text and adapt it manually, rather than rewriting all the content from scratch.
After copying the content, you can edit it in the selected language and enter the correct translation.
Translatable fields and common fields
Please note: Not all fields in the records translated.
Some data are descriptive and can therefore be managed in multiple languages, such as titles, descriptions, text, notes, or editorial content.
Other fields, on the other hand, are technical or structural and remain the same across all languages. This means that if you edit or delete them in one language, the change will also be applied to the others.
Examples of fields that cannot be translated
- In records , the fields that are not translatable and remain constant across Italian, English, and French are: artist, dimensions and weight, ID, tag, location, acquisition values, insurance, and appraisal.
- In records , the data that are common across languages are: date of birth and death, school or movement, and nationality.
- In records , the fields that are not translatable and remain consistent across languages are:curator, organizer, tags, venue,associatedartists, andpromoter.
The same logic applies to the other sections as well: text fields can be translated, while technical, identifying, or structural data generally remain the same across all languages.
Be careful with common fields: When working in multilingual mode, pay attention to fields that cannot be translated.
If you edit a field that is common to multiple languages while viewing the English or French version of record, the change will also be applied to the Italian version.
For this reason, before editing or deleting technical, identifying, or structural data, always make sure that this is information you want to update for all languages.
How to translate a record
To fill out a record another language:
- Select the record want to translate.
- Click the icon to enter mode edit.
- Open the multilingual menu in the upper-right corner.
- Select the language you want.
- Enter or edit the text in the fields provided.
- If necessary, copy the content from another language and adapt it manually.
- Save your changes.
Once saved, the record the content entered in the available languages.
